It’s about keeping a dream alive.
You Can Play was created to carry on Brendan Burke’s (Dec.8, 1988 – Feb. 5, 2010) legacy in support of the message, “If you can play, you can play.” It was his dream that inspired the Project.
Wingels’ friend Brendan, who played for the Miami University Redhawks hockey team and passed away in a car accident, was spearheading an advocacy campaign against homophobia in hockey. He was out to his closest friends and family. His brother Patrick, a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers and his father Brian Burke, currently the President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs launched the campaign and has reached a great deal of support by many hockey athletes.
